November Spartan of the Month: Ross Millen

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with an MSci in Geology, Ross' transferrable skills allowed him to kickstart a career in technology with Sparta Global. Discover his story below...

Tell us about joining Sparta Global.

I attended the University of Birmingham and attained an MSci in Geology. I then selected to go through Sparta Global’s Business Analysis programme and completed my training virtually.

I joined in March 2022, graduating from the Academy at the end of April and starting my first role with a client by May 3rd!

How did you decide Sparta Global was the right career move for you?

Sparta Global was the right career move for me as it was the perfect way to enter the tech industry. Coming out of university from an alternate background (albeit with transferrable skills), Sparta gave me the opportunity to build on various skills during the training, obtain my BCA qualification, and prepare me for corporate life.

How did you find your training at the Academy, and how did your training prepare you for work?

I really enjoyed my time during training and found it extremely engaging throughout. Sparta’s training set me up well to prepare for my role client side with technical skills support and important soft skills development.

Can you tell us about the connections you have built through Sparta? How have you found the community to be?

The connections I have built through Sparta have been built with those who Spartans who are also working on-site with my proposed client, and people I trained alongside in my original cohort. Upon arriving at my client, I was greeted by the Sparta Champions there and was introduced to everyone on the same path as me.

What is your current position and with what company?

My current position is a Business Analyst working within the Enterprise Architecture department of a multinational asset management company.

Tell us a little bit about your day-to-day role. What do you get stuck into?

The day-to-day of my role varies a lot which happens to be an aspect I really enjoy. Working within Enterprise Architecture, I am essentially an Analyst for all the domains within global technology, working closely with the solution architects and performing regular analysis when required. Work also regularly includes the likes of creating Power BI dashboards, and PowerApps Visualisations, changing existing processes, as well as being the custodian for the client’s 2500 application records that exist within our data repository and much more.

How have you found your first tech role?

Great to be honest, everything I was expecting and - of course - a lot more! I look forward to continuing to develop my skills while offering as much value as possible to my team and the wider business.

How did it feel to be named Spartan of the Month?

Proud and nice to have recognition for the hard work during this last month, but also throughout my placement so far.

Would you recommend Sparta to other graduates and if so – why?

Yes, for sure. I believe this is a great avenue for any graduate looking to go into technology or change careers. The training offered, the quality of clients, and the engagement throughout your placement all amount to why I would recommend Sparta to other graduates.
